Victoria, BC – On September 14 and 15, opera superstar Jane Eaglen will perform in Victoria with the Victoria Symphony for the very first time. Conducted by Music Director Tania Miller, she will sing arias from three of Wagner’s most well known operas. There will be two performances at the Royal Theatre, September 14 at 2:30pm and September 15 at 8:00pm.
Pre-concert talks will begin 45 minutes before each performance.
Ms. Eaglen has an international reputation and the repertoire chosen for these concerts will highlight her renowned portrayals of Wagner’s heroines. Wagner’s operas are celebrated for their drama, their powerful scores, and their emotion. Ms Eaglen will sing the joyful ‘Dich, Teure Halle’ from Tannhäuser, aswell as the emotional and tragic ‘Liebestod’ aria in which her character, Isolde, sings over the body of her dead lover. Ms Eaglen has performed these roles all over the world to critical acclaim and her visit to Victoria will no doubt have audiences on their feet.

Other highlights of the new season include performances of Nielsen’s Symphony no. 4 “The Inextinguishable”, Handel’s Water Music and Last Night of the Proms. The season also includes collaborations with the South Island Dancers, the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra and a spectacular performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana in March which will feature the Victoria Children’s Choir and the Victoria Philharmonic Choir. Over 50 diverse concerts will be performed in this exciting and busy concert season.
The 2008-2009 season marks Tania Miller's sixth as music director of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, an appointment that made her the first woman to hold such a significant position in Canada. Her vibrancy and dynamic approach to music making have inspired many innovations with the Victoria Symphony and a new era of artistic growth for the orchestra.
Jane Eaglen has one of the most formidable reputations in the opera world today. She has garnered spectacular reviews worldwide, enjoying unique success in the contrasting roles of Isolde (for the Metropolitan Opera, Seattle Opera, Teatro Liceu Barcelona, Lyric Opera of Chicago and in Puerto Rico); Leonore (debuted for the Seattle Opera) and Brunnhilde (performed in Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Milan, New York, Oslo and the UK).

Terence Tam joins the Victoria Symphony as concertmaster
Appointed Concertmaster of the Victoria Symphony in 2007, Canadian virtuoso Terence Tam has been performing publicly on the violin and piano since the age of eight. He has been a frequent recitalist and chamber musician in Canada, the U.S.A. and Australia, and has also performed in England, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

Victoria, BC – On Sunday, September 30th, 2:30pm tenor Mark Dubois and host Scott Walker join Tania Miller in an afternoon of Austrian waltzes and operettas. This is the first concert in the Victoria Symphony’s Royal Tea Series which features, not only the beautiful music of Strauss, Lehar, Schubert and Bernstein, but also a good cup of tea prior to the show. For all Royal Tea concerts, audience members are invited to arrive at 1:30pm to enjoy some tea and cookies.

Quartetto Gelato regroups after tragic loss and opens Victoria Symphony’s 2007/2008 season
Victoria, BC – On Thursday, September 13 at 2:30 pm the Victoria Symphony opens its 2007/2008 season with the Beltone Pops series. The first concerts in this series, conducted by Brian Jackson, will feature the acclaimed ensemble ‘Quartetto Gelato’. After last year’s tragic loss of oboist Cynthia Steljes, the group is as focused as ever and will dedicate their performance to her. The show titled ‘Italianissimo’ is an entertaining program of music featuring everything from opera to tangos.

Victoria, BC- On May 10th and 12th Victoria’s beautiful Christ Church Cathedral becomes the setting for the next performances in the 2007 Mozart Festival. The first of the two concerts features vocalists from the CapriCCio Vocal Ensemble as well as guest singers. This performance starts at 8pm. The second features a chamber ensemble of Victoria Symphony musicians, starting at 7:30pm.

The Victoria Symphony will be bidding a fond farewell to its grand piano this week when it is auctioned off on eBay. The piano is a Baldwin nine-foot Concert Grand and features a 1982 autograph by Canadian jazz legend Oscar Peterson, who celebrates his 80th birthday today.

Young soprano wins Symphony Splash audition
The Victoria Symphony is proud to announce that Victoria resident Heather MacLeod will be the young artist participating in the 16th annual Victoria Symphony Splash on July 31, 2005.
The May 9th performance features Symphonies no. 2 and no. 4, two bold works that firmly established Beethoven as an innovator, and showed his determination to carry on despite his progressive loss of hearing. This performance will mark the first time the Victoria Symphony presents a video screen enhanced concert.

The performance of Bach’s noble and magnificent masterpiece, the Mass in B minor, on Saturday, March 12 and Monday, March 14 at the Royal Theatre at 8pm, marks the beginning of a four-year cycle of the composer’s great choral works to be performed by the Victoria Symphony.
It isn’t often that classical music audiences have the chance to hear a work performed by it’s own composer, but Victorians will be presented with such an opportunity when Kenji Fusé, the Victoria Symphony’s own principal viola player, performs his Concerto for Viola and Orchestra under the baton of acclaimed Principal Guest Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin on Sunday, February 27 at 2:30pm and Monday, February 28 at 8pm at the Royal Theatre.
