Jane Eaglen is in the prime of one of the most remarkable careers the world of opera knows today. At Lyric Opera of Chicago, Eaglen’s portrayal of the goddess/heroine of Wagner’s Ring cycle was acclaimed as "the finest Brünnhilde alive today" (Opera). The singer received still more rave reviews for her subsequent performances as Brünnhilde in complete Ring Cycles in Chicago, with Riccardo Muti at La Scala in Milan, at the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera and the Vienna Staatsoper. The bel canto tragedy Norma is also a specialty of Eaglen's, and her triumphant performances in the formidable title role led London's Sunday Times to christen her "the Norma of the 1990s."

                Alain Trudel: conductor
                Feaured Performer: Arthur Rowe

Following his New York solo recital, The New York Times wrote: “The Canadian pianist Arthur Rowe made an immediate and positive impression...before eight bars had gone by, one knew he was capable of vigor without heaviness, energy without excess of drive. It was first-rate playing: a kind of execution tinglingly alive to the shape and contribution of each phrase”. Enthusiastic reviews have followed Arthur Rowe's performances in cities across Canada, and The United States, as well as in Mexico, Europe, and New Zealand. Reviewing a solo recital in London England, The London Times spoke of his “unusual clarity of articulation”, and “poetry of expression”. The Minneapolis Tribune wrote “sparkling piano playing”, The Rome Daily News, “a dazzling performance”, and David Burge, writing in The San Diego Tribune said, “Rowe is a marvelous pianist… even when he is pushed to the limit by extreme virtuosic demands...he can concentrate all of his considerable talents on vital matters of phrasing, tone and ensemble”.

If there’s anything that remains consistent from album to album with Cole—who has sold over a million units worldwide--it has been her desire to explore the entire spectrum of human emotions. Her approach on her latest self titled album was to perform songs dealing with an aspect of life all people experience but rarely talk about: self-deception. “I started looking at songs that loosely deal with the concept of self-deception or denial,” says Cole. “I find that I gravitate towards this subject in songs very naturally. I think it’s because of my love of subtext. What's implied is always more intriguing than what's being literally stated. And it let's people go to the place that is the most emotionally compelling for them." Holly Cole performs a selection of soulful Christmas favourites with the Victoria Symphony on December 20th.

Voodoo Violin Concerto is a virtuosic handling of DBR’s Haitian heritage. This violin concerto is most concerned with the notion of the ritual, or our collective rites of passage. From the current state of a highly technological country in the United States of America (the techno textures and rhythms of "Filtering"), to my own relationship with Catholicism (the meditative tonality of "Prayer"), I find "Tribe" in all of its primitive repetition, to, perhaps, be the most accurate depiction of where we are right now, as a collective, civilized society; a collective, civilized world."
